When should a consumer unit be replaced?

An older fuse box is not automatically unsafe simply because a newer model exists. The sensible question is whether the equipment, protective devices and surrounding installation remain suitable for the way the property is used.

Reasons to arrange an assessment

• Visible heat damage, cracking or discolouration
• Regular tripping that has not been properly diagnosed
• Missing or limited RCD protection
• Planned additions such as an EV charger, electric shower or outbuilding supply
• Previous alterations with unclear labelling or certification

Do not remove the cover to check inside. A consumer unit contains live parts even when individual circuits are switched off. Photographs should only show the closed front, labels and anything already visible around it.

Is a metal consumer unit always required?

Current installation work commonly uses non-combustible enclosures, but the presence of an older plastic enclosure does not by itself prove that immediate replacement is necessary. Condition, location, connections, protective devices and the wider installation all matter.

What does replacement involve?

A responsible upgrade starts with checks on the incoming supply, earthing and existing circuits. The work normally includes isolation, replacement equipment, circuit identification, testing and electrical certification. Faults discovered during testing may need separate investigation or remedial work.
