How to prepare for a house rewire

A house rewire is a substantial project rather than a simple price per bedroom. Property construction, occupancy, floor access, finish expectations and the number and position of electrical points all affect the plan.

Build a room-by-room brief

List sockets, lighting, switches, smoke alarms, heating controls, data points and fixed appliances for every room. Include outdoor power, an EV charger, solar or battery plans even if they will be installed later.

Decide on finishes

Agree whether accessories are standard white, decorative or smart. Discuss chasing, lifting floors, access holes, plaster repairs, decoration and waste removal. A quotation should state what making good is included and what is excluded.

Occupied or empty property?

Working in an occupied furnished home generally needs more protection, coordination and temporary arrangements. An empty property during renovation may provide better access, but sequencing with kitchens, plastering and other trades still matters.

Survey before quotation

A responsible rewire quotation normally follows a site survey. The electrician needs to understand routes, supply and earthing, consumer-unit position, building layout and any sections intended to remain.

Keep the paperwork

The completed installation should be inspected, tested and appropriately certified. Keep certificates, circuit information and equipment instructions with the property records. They are useful for future maintenance, alterations and a later sale.
