Common causes of VFD and inverter trips

A VFD trip is a protective response, not a diagnosis. The fault code, operating point, motor, load and supply conditions all help identify why the drive stopped.

A variable-frequency drive or inverter trip should be treated as evidence. The displayed code identifies what the drive detected, but not always the underlying cause. Repeatedly resetting the drive can remove useful history and may expose the motor or machinery to further stress.

Record the evidence first

Before power is cycled, record the complete fault code, drive status, commanded frequency, motor current if displayed, operating mode and what the machine was doing. Note whether the trip happens during acceleration, steady running, deceleration, a process change or apparently at random.

Common trip groups

  • Overcurrent during acceleration or under sudden load
  • Motor overload or sustained high current
  • Overvoltage during deceleration or regeneration
  • Undervoltage or unstable incoming supply
  • Earth leakage or motor-cable insulation faults
  • Drive or motor overtemperature
  • Phase loss or supply imbalance where monitored
  • External trip, safety or process interlock input
  • Communications loss or control-reference problems
  • Internal drive hardware or cooling failure

The same displayed category can have several causes. An overcurrent trip may relate to aggressive acceleration, a jammed load, motor-cable damage, incorrect parameters or a failing motor. An overvoltage trip during stopping may point toward deceleration and regenerated energy rather than incoming voltage alone.

Separate drive, motor and machine

The drive is only one part of the system. The motor, cable, mechanical load, supply and control signals must be considered. A replacement drive fitted without establishing the cause can trip in exactly the same way—or be damaged by the original fault.

Parameter records and change history matter. If the fault began after commissioning work, motor replacement or process changes, compare the motor data and relevant settings with the documented design. Parameters should not be altered simply to suppress a protective trip.

Intermittent VFD faults

Intermittent trips benefit from accurate timing and operating context. Production speed, temperature, product load, direction changes and nearby maintenance activity may reveal a pattern. Drive history, PLC alarms and electrical measurements can then be correlated rather than viewed separately.
