Contactor pulls in but the motor will not run — what should be checked?
A contactor operating proves only part of the control sequence. The motor circuit, overload, supply, connections and mechanical load still need to be assessed methodically.
A contactor pulling in can make a fault look more straightforward than it is. It confirms that the coil has received enough voltage to move the contactor, but it does not prove that three-phase power is reaching the motor correctly or that the motor can turn the load.
What the operating contactor actually proves
The control circuit has reached the point where the contactor coil is energised. Depending on the machine, this may confirm that some permissives, interlocks and safety devices are satisfied. It does not confirm the condition of the main contacts, overload, protective device, motor cable, motor windings or driven equipment.
Main fault groups to consider
- Loss of one or more phases upstream of the contactor
- Worn, damaged or high-resistance main contactor contacts
- An overload relay that has tripped or is not passing all phases correctly
- A protective device or local isolator fault
- Loose, overheated or damaged terminations
- A motor winding or motor-cable fault
- A brake, mechanical jam or seized driven load
- A VFD or soft starter that is not actually issuing motor output
An audible contactor operation should not be treated as proof that the power circuit is healthy. Voltage indications can also be misleading if they are taken without understanding the circuit and expected load conditions.
Why the symptom matters
Does the motor remain completely silent, hum, attempt to turn or trip protection immediately? Does the contactor stay in or release? Did the fault follow maintenance, a production change or a period of difficult starting? Those observations help separate a control problem from a power-circuit, motor or mechanical problem.
A responsible diagnostic approach
The useful route is to confirm the intended sequence, review drawings and fault history where available, then test the supply and power path under safe site procedures. The motor and driven equipment also need to be considered together. Replacing the contactor simply because it moves can waste time; replacing it simply because the motor does not run can do the same.
Industrial equipment may contain multiple supplies, stored energy and automatic movement. Diagnosis requires competent isolation and testing rather than live access by unqualified personnel.
