Three-phase motor humming but not turning — common causes
A humming motor is receiving some electrical energy, but that does not mean it has a healthy three-phase supply or can accelerate its load safely.
A three-phase motor that hums but does not turn should be stopped promptly. The sound shows that the motor is being energised in some form; it does not prove that all three phases are present, that the windings are connected correctly or that the driven equipment is free to move.
Loss of a phase or an unbalanced supply
Single phasing is an important possibility. A fuse, contact, termination, isolator, cable core or supply problem can leave the motor without a complete three-phase supply. The motor may hum, fail to develop starting torque and draw damaging current. Measurements need to be interpreted across the complete power path rather than relying on one voltage indication taken without load.
Motor and connection faults
Loose or overheated terminals, an incorrect star/delta connection, damaged windings or an internal motor fault can produce a similar symptom. Recent maintenance matters: if the fault appeared after a motor change, cable disconnection or panel work, the connections and intended motor data deserve careful review.
Mechanical resistance
The electrical system may be trying to start a seized bearing, jammed pump, tight gearbox, brake that has not released or obstructed process. Repeated starting attempts can overheat the motor and stress contactors and protective devices. Electrical and mechanical evidence should therefore be considered together.
What useful evidence looks like
- Whether the shaft attempts to move or remains still
- Whether protection trips, and after how long
- Whether the contactor stays energised
- Any recent maintenance or process change
- Motor nameplate details and the normal starting method
- Current and voltage behaviour assessed by a competent person
The correct response is not to keep resetting protection or increasing an overload setting. Safe isolation, supply checks, motor testing and an assessment of the connected load are needed to separate the fault groups.
